Why I Use The Sims Resource And Pay For It

In the Sims community, saying you use The Sims Resource (TSR), can be a controversial statement. A lot of flak has been given to TSR since it uses the creations of numerous creators, and does not have a pay structure that rewards creators consistently or fairly for being the life-blood of that community. I do hear these complaints, and I do think there is some merit to them, but I also believe that no site is perfect. I also know that TSR provides numerous things that are costly to develop:

  • Server space isn’t free, these downloads are on a physical server that TSR has to pay for. Think about how much Dropbox costs you per month… and then think about how many thousands of GB TSR hosts
  • TSR still keeps their content from all the way back in The Sims 1 days. This is a level of archival that is nearly unprecedented in most gaming communities, and this is quite beneficial for supporting creations that would have otherwise been lost in time
  • TSR has a free option for users, albeit a bit annoying to use, it does exist and all creations in Early Access are later put out per EAs policy

I personally have been a member of TSR since 2004, which is about a year or so after I started playing The Sims. So, honestly, I think that TSR and this style of CC-finding has just always been part of my Sims identity.

I also subscribe to the yearly subscription to VIP, and will continue to do so. At roughly $50 Canadian per year, I think that this service is quite valuable as a CC-aholic. I personally am not a big fan of scouring websites, tumblr, or pinterest (although I do when bored and desperate). CC shopping on TSR is something I am completely addicted to… and have been for a long time. I think part of this is habitual, but I do love the VIP experience of adding 250 items to a basket and then downloading all. For TS3 and TS4, files can be automatically downloaded and installed to your game. I work a lot, and I’m not a huge fan of babying my downloads unless there’s an actual error I need to troubleshoot.

The following benefits are offered in a VIP plan:

  • an ad free experience with no countdown timers
  • download content and all required files in a single click
  • exclusive early access to around 140 files at any one time, with new content added every day
  • a download basket so you only have to make one download for hundreds of files in your basket
  • don’t like messing with mods? Then use our cool download manager so you can see what TSR content you have installed and easily reinstall and uninstall it
  • full download history
  • keep infinite favorites
  • infinite scrolling instead of clicking through pages
  • exclusive access to a VIP-only Discord channel

At the end of the day, I think that TSR is simply a resource for simmers that we can choose to engage in or not. Creators are all free to upload their content or not, and there are always options like free social media if this is what is preferred. However, for the simple love of The Sims, I think that TSR provides a great repository of options.

I've been playing The Sims since 2004. I've played every iteration, but the Sims 2 will always remain as my very favourite. I'm passionate about getting others involved in playing the Sims 2 and sharing my stories, as well as trying my hand at CC. But, I also love the other Sims games (Castaway Stories anybody?)
